Sailor Cosmos from the Sailor Moon, Sailor Stars Manga
First worn to:
Animartimes 2011
Sailor Moon was my first real jump into the world of Japanese animation and later the first leap into Japanese manga (comic books). I loved the series when it aired on Canadian TV in the 1990s, and I loved the art style and the cute costume designs for the characters. Sailor Cosmos is not the first Sailor Moon character I have brought to life, and I doubt she will be last. Even now in my adult years I still love everything about the show.
I chose to make Sailor Cosmos, despite the fact that she only shows up briefly in the manga for a few pages near the end, because I loved her costume's style. All the other sailor warriors had cute little sailor uniforms which suited them perfectly as teenagers, but here was Sailor Cosmos, back from centuries of fighting in the future, and a woman grown. It also represented a challenge for me; the actual shows a fitted dress with a flared bottom and no seams whatsoever! So I had to really think of how to take it from a 2D line drawing to an actual wearable garment. I settled on a princess seam dress with triangle gores in the hem to give it the flared skirt shape. The cape is pleated down to fit the shoulders and attached under the sailor collar and the rainbow sunburst panel on front is held on with velcro. I made all the accessories from old costume jewelry and Christmas ornaments!
